Cruise Select

For those who love lazy days at sea, or those seeking for the most sophisticated way to travel between the continents of Europe and America, complete with a fitting air of grace, space and formality, a transatlantic voyage is ideal. Although these grand ocean crossings became less frequent with the astronomic rise of air travel from the 1960s onwards, Cunard's real ocean liner, Queen Mary 2, brought iconic transatlantic voyages back with style in 2004, offering regular scheduled North Atlantic crossings. Arrival into New York by ship is unforgettable, gliding past the Statue of Liberty and the restored Ellis Island in the early morning light, as Manhattan begins to loom into view after passing under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge linking Brooklyn to Staten Island.

However, you can also cross the Atlantic on a repositioning cruise, generally offered about twice a year as cruise ships travel from the Caribbean to Europe in the Spring for their summer season, and again as they return to the Caribbean in the autumn months. Usually, the warmer southern route is taken, between ports such as Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, San Juan, Antigua and Barbados to Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia), Athens, and Southampton. Along the way, cruises may likely call at a number of ports, particularly the Canary Islands and Atlantic-strewn Azores, depending on the cruise line and itinerary.

To while away the time at sea, you can listen to lectures by renowned authors and leading personalities, celebrities of stage or screen, or specialists on all manner of subjects, including maritime history (a particular favourite subject on such crossings), cooking demonstrations and daily social events.
